If you thought football season was over, it’s not. The return of the XFL allows football bettors to keep on keeping on, even though the Super Bowl has come and gone.

The first week of XFL action was exciting and, after strong performances by the Guardians and the Defenders, these two teams will match up in what might be the game of the week.

The Defenders are laying 5 points in this spot, and while I’m not sure who wins this game, I am also looking at the under, when more XFL Week 2 odds become available at DraftKings Sportsbook.

  • The Defenders defense looked great last week, stymying the Seattle Dragons on a number of occasions.
  • Elijah Campbell had one pick-six and nearly had a second with a ball that hit him right in the chest.
  • Campbell also had a blocked punt.
  • The Defenders got a boost from the pick-six and the touchdown off of the blocked punt, but the offense was just OK. They finished with only 303 yards of total offense.

As for the Guardians, they pulled one of the bigger upsets of Week 1, not only covering as a dog but winning outright. They held the Tampa Bay Vipers to just 3 points – the worst output of the week – and the Vipers were expected to be good. Their regular-season win total was the highest on the board at 7.5 entering the season.

With two good defenses on the field, I’ll be expecting an under in this spot.

Pick: DC Defenders at -5

New York Islanders at Nashville Predators

Date: Thursday, February 13th

Nashville will welcome back a familiar face on Thursday when former head coach Barry Trotz returns with his new team, the Islanders. Trotz has done a marvelous job in his time with Isles while the Predators have been stumbling.

The Preds do have home-ice advantage in this spot, but I don’t know how much of an edge that will be.

  • They’re just 11-11-4 (11-15) at home this season and they’ve dropped five of their last six on home ice.
  • Meanwhile, the Islanders are a healthy 15-9-2 on the road.
  • On top of that, the teams appear to be heading in opposite directions.

The Isles had won four of six heading into their Tuesday meeting with the Philadelphia Flyers.

  • The Predators are just 8-10-1 in their last 19 contests.
  • The Preds are struggling at the offensive end of the ice right as they’re averaging just 1.67 goals per game in February, which ranks 28th in the NHL.

That doesn’t sound like it will bode well for them against the Islanders, who rank fifth in goals allowed this season (per game) and save percentage.

Pick: Islanders

Boston Red Sox Regular-Season Win Total

Now that the dust has settled from the Mookie Betts-David Price blockbuster, DraftKings has opened up the MLB 2020 regular-season win totals and one under that I like is the Red Sox.

Some might see this as an overreaction to the news, but I don’t see this team being much better than .500 next season.

  1. To start, Betts is an MVP-caliber player as he won the award in 2018 when the Red Sox won the World Series.
  2. And while many people feel like Price was a good salary dump here (he was), Price was a big key in the Red Sox World Series run in the playoffs.
  3. Sure, he’s not who he used to be, but the bigger issue is who takes over for him?
  • The Red Sox will still have a solid batting lineup, but let’s look at their pitching rotation: Chris Sale (if healthy), Eduardo Rodriguez, Nathan Eovaldi and Martin Perez.
  • If Sale is healthy, this is an OK unit. If he can’t stay healthy, this could be among the worst in the Majors.
  • There’s also nothing special about the Red Sox bullpen.

Beyond that, think the team had to fire manager Alex Cora because of the Houston Astros scandal.

Now the team is looking for a manager, traded a generational talent because of a salary dump, and had a very quiet offseason in terms of free agents. It’s hard to expect this team to win 86 games. They’re not better than they were last year when they won 84.

Pick: Under 85.5
